European Golf: Rory in last chance saloon…

The European golfing year comes to a close this week, with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The key to this tournament is whether you feel you can trust Rory McIlroy with your money.

The Northern Irish star has an excellent record around this course. He has played it eight times, winning twice and never coming lower than 11th – posting a course average of just above 68. This suggests that best odds of 9/1 could be a steal. He also loves Dubai as a whole – winning four times in 16 starts here.

However, his play since the Ryder Cup, where he wasn’t at his best, has been decidedly average. He blamed the altitude at Sun City last week for his mediocre play, but that wouldn’t explain his dismal show in China.

All that said, there is only Francisco Molinari who is higher ranked in this field and some clearly less talented players are not far behind in the betting odds. A tricky call, but we’re going to give Rory another chance.

Our second selection is Lucas Bjerregaard. The Dane played very well in Turkey a couple of weeks ago and has won this year at the Alfred Dunhill Links, showing he can play in the wind. We’ll take a chance on him.

Recommendations:

McIlroy to win, 1 pt, at 9/1, Betfair Sportsbook

Bjerregaard 0.5 pts each way at 35/1, 1/4 the odds for the first five places, SkyBet
