NAP OF THE DAY: Calett Mad, (1350 Cheltenham), 1pt win, 8/1 generally available
OK, so we are severely tempting fate as blog regular and ultimate troll Singlefarmpayment looks likely to go off favourite. He is up another 4lbs and it’s not a given that this longer trip suits. He’ll clearly win now we desert him, but we prefer both Vicente and Calett Mad. The 6yo Calett Mad has the scope, ran well here on reappearance, and should love the extra trip.
Kalondra, (1425 Cheltenham), 6/1: festival novice 1-2 Rather Be and Mister Whitaker will be popular, with Rather Be looking the more likely. However, both could find Kalondra a right hoof-ful. He can be hit and miss, but there have been signs that when he hits he hits hard. His third here at last season’s end was a good effort, and he looked likely to run a career best until falling at Galway next time. He may just have the class to be a Ryanair Chase contender, making his mark of 148 here pretty manageable.
First Assignment, (1500 Cheltenham), 5/2: looked promising last season and delivered on that with a last gasp win here over a shorter trip last month. That was a better win than the bare result as he was given plenty to do. This longer trip should help and a rise of 5lbs for winning a 20 runner affair here is potentially very generous.
Christmas In April, (1530 Cheltenham), 9/1: whilst we are big fans of Ian Williams, his Speedo Boy looks too short here as despite his good flat form he is very much unproven over these undulations. That can’t be applied to Christmas In April who was a staying on third to First Assignment (see 1500 race) here last time. We think that’s decent form, and with that return under his belt he can do better again here.
