NAP OF THE DAY: Kalondra, (1315 Haydock), 2pts win, 5/2 generally available
We were on this second season chaser in the big handicap at Cheltenham last weekend, he was travelling well but with plenty of race left when unfortunate to unseat at the 5th last. That gives his recent form the somewhat ominous recent figures of “FU” – nonetheless he is a chaser of huge promise. He obviously needs to jump better, but he has the talent to dominate this opposition.
Very First Time, (1240 Haydock), 7/1: This young chaser was shaping up well as a novice last year but came up short raised in class at Cheltenham and Aintree. Is 5lbs lower as a result, and the stable rarely aim at the big festivals if they’re not considered up to it. A summer break and a slight drop in class make him interesting on seasonal debut.
Cresswell Legend, (1255 Ascot), 3/1: Kim Bailey’s 7yo was a fair hurdler but already looks like he could make a better chaser. His two chasing runs have been seconds where in each case the winner and third have won again since. Given that, this handicap run off the same rating as his hurdles mark, should give him a clear winning chance.
San Benedeto, (1515 Ascot), 11/1: performs well at this track and was a close 4th in this last year off a 5lb higher mark. Looks in good form this year and was a reasonable 3rd in a good Exeter race last time. Has a bit to find with Ozzie The Oscar, but the return to Ascot is crucial. Jockey Bryony Frost is back in great form.
