The PGA Tour kicks off the new year with its traditional jolly in Hawaii, known as the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
This event is open to winners of tournaments during the previous year, with only Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson sitting out.
The Plantation Course at Kapalua on the island of Maui is widely regarded as a big hitters paradise, with wide fairways and four par fives.
Dustin Johnson is the defending champion and must have a great chance of winning for the third time. However, he’s quite a short price, especially when we’re not sure how much practice players have undertaken over the holidays.
Spaniard Jon Rahm finished second here last year, his debut at the course, and must be more comfortable this time round. We’ll take a punt that he puts his undoubted power to good use.
Our second selection comes from further down the betting list. We picked Charles Howell III late last year to win his first PGA tournament in 11 years. He promptly did so the week after we selected him! Still, he plays well in the wind, hits the ball far and scrambles well. If he’s kept his form he has a better chance than his odds suggest.
Rahm to win, 1 pt, at 15/2, SkyBet
Howell III 0.5 pts each way at 66/1, 1/4 the odds for the first four places, widely available
