There are two tournaments due to start this week, but in these early days of the golfing year only a few of the game’s elite are teeing off.
The Abu Dhabi Championship starts on Wednesday and features three of the world’s top ten. We at Lap of the Odds think there is usually value at the top of the market, and this starts with Dustin Johnson. He finished second in 2017 and ninth the year later and has an obvious favourite’s chance.
DJ ran into an inspired Tommy Fleetwood in 2017, who defended the following year. It’s too much to ask Fleetwood to win three years in a row and so we are going to side with Brooks Koepka, the world no.2. Koepka is around twice the price of DJ, and this is probably the only time you’ll see him the same price as Fleetwood in a golf tournament.
The second tournament takes place in California, the pro-am Desert Classic which takes place over three courses.
There are only two members of the top ten teeing up, Justin Rose and Jon Rahm. This event tends to be won in a pretty low score, which tends to mean plenty of birdies. We tend to think Rose performs best on tricky courses, and so we’re going to side with Rahm, the defending champion.
Koepka to win in Abu Dhabi, 1 pt, at 12/1, SkyBet
Rahm to win the Desert Classic, 1 pt, at 15/2, SkyBet
And the win double, 1 pt, at approximately 110/1, SkyBet
