The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Steelriver, (1925 Newcastle), 1pt win, 8/1 generally available
This veteran 9yo has steadily dropped to a favourable mark since making the move over to the Michael Herrington’s Irish yard. Came back from a break with a good staying on second to Archimedes last week. Is 6lbs better off, and with plenty of likely early pace on this stiff track it could play to his late closing strengths. Looks notably over-priced.
Iwilldoit, (1300 Market Rasen), 11/4: One of several good new trainers, Sam Thomas showed the hand of a veteran in getting his gelding rated down at 103 for a recent handicap debut at Bangor. He duly sluiced up, and gets to race here with a fixed 7lb penalty despite being raised a further 5lb for future races. Looks a value price given those pounds in hand and the ever reliable Charlie Deutsch steering.
Friday Night Light, (1335 Market Rasen), 9/2: Has been running in top handicaps without much success. His mark has dropped finally to today’s 119, opening up access to this lower grade class 4 event. Hasn’t been in a class 4 since winning well at Newbury a year ago to the day. Admittedly hasn’t shown much since last Spring, but this drop down and too weight against lesser horses is from the classic Pipe stable playbook.
The Winkler, (1405 Market Rasen), 4/1: an under-the-radar young trainer, Kelly Morgan has been quietly effective with a handful of runners whilst sister Laura has been making the family name. With 2 wins from 7 runs it’s worth checking her occasional runner, and Irish import The Winkler looks an interesting addition. Hasn’t raced since May but that’s not usually a problem for the yard and has been found a winnable race.
