Saturday Yankee: Make Bel your Ami

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY:  Belami Des Pictons, (1500 Ascot), 2pts win, 6/1 generally available

Represents the flying Venetia Williams yard and as such not one to be scared of coming back from a year long lay-off as that is something of a hallmark of the yard. Was good enough to be running the top class Waiting Patiently close when last seen at Carlisle, and a 2lb drop for that looks bafflingly generous. A race deep in talent, but most have shown their hand to the handicapper and help prop up a potential gift of a price for the less exposed Belami.

Wakanda, (1515 Haydock), 8/1: Trainer Sue Smith is hitting her stride in January as always with a 50% strike rate. Always one to watch with staying chasers, her Wakanda won a good event off this mark at Doncaster last January. Has run with credit already this season but with the stable now in full flow he is fancied to repeat his January heroics. This race is deeper in numbers than quality.

Vendor, (1545 Haydock), 13/2:  formerly useful when trained by Alan King, rated in the high 130s. Had a two year layoff and showed the first signs of form here just before Christmas when a fair fourth.  Ignore his poor fourth just four days later over a longer trip.  He has had a chance to refresh and as he is also from the Sue Smith yard he can ride the wave of stable form off a generous looking 119.

Moonlighter, (1605 Ascot), 5/1:  has to beat the odds-on Downtown Getaway, but looked likely to do that at Newbury last time but for a late fall. Not sure why there would be such a price differential on that evidence, particularly given some of the horse health issues emerging at the favourite’s yard.
