NAP OF THE DAY: Valkenburg, (1540 Ayr), 1pt win, 8/1 generally available
Trainer Keith Dalgleish plays all the handicap angles and he was quick to throw this juvenile into handicaps As the new year made him eligible. That also opened up longer trips, and with his massive weight for age allowance he was interesting here last time when not jumping well but ultimately staying on well for a never nearer sixth. Two Linda lower, an extra half mile, and the peerless Brian Hughes in the saddle, he looks well worth an interest at the odds.
Polished Steel, (1335 Thurles), 4/1: was building up some useful novice form before disappointing last time. Didn’t look as though he stayed the longer trip there but reverts to 2 miles here for handicap debut. Many of these reoppose from a recent course event, the handicapper would have them in a bundle, but that could leave for a newcomer like Polished Steel to outclass the lot.
Fiddlers Bow, (1505 Ayr), 4/1: Responded really well to a breathing operation when breaking his longstanding duck over fences here recently. That was a nice little race and in registering a smooth win he was probably running to a much better mark than the generous 5lb rise dished out by the handicapper.
Roaring Bull, (1515 Thurles), 5/4: was a useful novice hurdler last year finishing rated 133. Is 5lbs lower for a first chasing handicap and is surely better than that mark. The rest are mostly exposed, but Gordon Elliott’s 6yo has scope to improve and will surely be rated. Stone or more better in time. That can start today.
