We didn’t pick any winners in the golf last week, but both of our selections played well. And so we’re going to continue with our belief that the top of the market offers value.
First up is the Dubai Desert Classic, won last year by Li Haotong who finished one shot clear of Rory McIlroy. Rory is teeing off in the US this week so this week’s favourite in Dubai is the Bryson DeChambeau.
The American’s rise to the ranks of the game’s elite has been impressive. Now ranked number 5 in the world, from 94 at the start of 2018, he has won three times in his last eight starts. And that was in the more rarefied air of the PGA Tour.
On his last visit to the European Tour he looked all over the winner after 54 holes after a late collapse. He’s a more seasoned campaigner now, and we think a double digit price offers value.
The PGA Tour continues the ‘West Coast Swing’ with the Farmers Insurance Open, held at the famed Torrey Pines course in San Diego.
This tournament used to be almost the sole preserve of Tiger Woods, who won the event six times between 1999 and 2008, and then once more in 2013. However, this would be Tiger’s first outing this year and we’re going to steer clear.
Instead we’re going to side with a blog favourite, Jon Rahm. We tipped him last week and he played well in finishing sixth, shooting 21 under par. The Spaniard won here in 2017 and is in prime form – his last four finishes worldwide are tied 4th, win, tied 8th and last week’s 6th. We’ll try again.
Additionally, we considered a two point pick for DeChambeau, but instead we’ll try a one point pick on the DeChambeau/Rahm double.
DeChambeau to win Dubai Desert Classic, 1 pt, at 10/1, bet365
Rahm to win Farmers Insurance Open, 1 pt, at 11/1, SkyBet
1 pt on the win double at approximately 110/1, widely available
