NAP OF THE DAY: Ballasalla, (1250 Doncaster), 1pt win, 10/3 generally available
We have backed Donald McCain’s strapping novice chaser in both starts over fences only to rack up two seconds by an aggregate of less than a length. He has jumped very well to date and this track looks an ideal test. As a brother to National winner Ballabriggs this step up in trip seems sure to bring out some improvement, and it would be a family disgrace if this mark of 108 did not seriously underestimate his potential.
Cracking Find, (1355 Doncaster), 6/1: the test for this consistent sort will be to hang on for dear life in the first mile of what looks likely to be a cutthroat pace with a bunch of pacesetters in opposition. If he can, then he can overhaul them up this straight. Is 4lbs higher than when a narrow winner last time – that in itself should see him close – hopefully race tactics can help do the rest.
Court Liability, (1515 Huntingdon), 2/1: very much a darling of the Harry Whittington yard with four wins from four. Won well off a break last time , and this looks an excellent further opportunity. Has the final of this as a realistic target, and a nice win here should be just enough to see him in the weights for that race.
False Id, (1845 Newcastle), 5/1: has course form here if 211. Has looked held off this mark recently at Wolves, but this is really his track. useful apprentice find Laura Coughlan takes a much needed 7lbs off, with an effective rating of 51 looking very workable. Can be slowly away, and the bias here is tending to favour horses on or near the pace. But those risks look well baked in to what looks an attractive price.
