NAP OF THE DAY: Royal Cosmic, (1610 Newcastle), 1pt win, 7/2 generally available
She has excelled since returning to the all weather off the back of a 6 month break. Her fourth here was encouraging on reappearance, and she built on that with a narrow Southwell win over some in form rivals. Hasn’t been harshly dealt with and may still be improving. Favourite Tetradrachm looks to have been heavily penalised for a wide margin win and may be vulnerable.
Mudawwan, (1715 Newcastle), 4/1: these straight course races at Newcastle used to be at the mercy of hold-up horses but that has well and truly inverted. The rush to get cover has allowed front runners to dictate uncontested slow fractions making them harder to pass when they quicken late on. In this field that tactic looks best suited to Mudawwan, who ran a decent hird here last time from the front- this is an easier race.
Archimedes, (1745 Newcastle), 5/1: apart from an unlucky unseat, Dave Griffith’s busy gelding had been pretty consistent of late. He finished well for second here last time, and looks a safer call than the favourites.
Robeam, (1845 Newcastle), 9/2: this lightly raced 3yo showed little promise until finishing a close 5th at Southwell last time. Drops another pound and reached for the first time cheek pieces and looks to have a winning chance for top trainer Richard Faneuil.
