There was a touch of irony that, after the suspension of racing, our first day back ended up littered with non-runners, not least our nap who fell foul of the new vaccination protocols!! It’s off to Ireland for today’s nap…

NAP OF THE DAY: Cool Saint, (1440 Clonmel), 1pt win, 8/1 generally available
There are enough unexposed types from big yards in this Grade 3 to keep the market lively. We are happy to look past the ambitiously future entered Henry De Bromhead pair of Capuccimix and Minella Indo under Power and Blackmore respectively, and rely on the more proven ability of his mare Cool Saint under Paul Townend. She gets a 7lb mares allowance and looked set to continue a path of improvement when winning a 3 runner affair at Thurles last time until a last flight fall. She would have beaten First Approach there and he was a reasonable fourth in the Grade 1 at Leopardstown last time. She looks overpriced given the handicapper gives her just 2lbs to find on the much more well fancied Swordsman.
Silver Quay, (1405 Fontwell), 6/4 : has really hit form of late with two fluent Taunton wins. Escapes a penalty for that last win which was in conditional jockey company (which amazingly Bryony Frist remains qualified for). Will be 7lbs higher in future and should be a shoe-in with Bryony back on top. Some chasers returning to hurdles are helping prop up the market despite the sketchy record of such switching.
Athassel, (1755 Chelmsford), 9/1 : this old monkey is on a 27 race losing streak. In fairness he has dropped 2 stone now in the weights and has shown in two recent Lingfield runs under today’s jockey that he is ready to win having had some desperate luck in running. Wasn’t as good at Kempton and Wolves in between, but this track may suit and with Begley back on board he could be worth the gamble.
Gas Monkey, (1930 Chelmsford), 13/2 : an interesting little race where a number of the market leaders are unproven over this trip. That could open the door to Gas Monkey, a winner on all weather debut under Shelly Birkett, and a good second when returning to the all weather last time after a 3 month break. Gets the cheekpieces fitted as well and should go very close.
