A gallant effort from our long priced nap in yesterday’s Surrey National, he was never nearer than at the end but couldn’t quite reel them in after a bizarrely run race. Better luck today?

NAP OF THE DAY: Court Royale, (1615 Taunton), 1pt win, 12/1 generally available
A superb handicap hurdle and by far Taunton’s best race. Local legend Nicholls has to be respected with Capitaine, whilst Flying Tiger is getting very well handicapped, Nuba Negra should enjoy the sharper track and Fiesole is definitely being plotted for something. However this looks ideal for Court Royale, a course winner who loves to come from off a strong pace on good ground. Lots of front runners here, and it looks set up for a hold up ride, and this low weighted novice could have his finest moment.
Orchardstown Cross, (1545 Taunton), 3/1: hasn’t seen much racing but was clearly expected to shrug off a year’s layoff when made favourite on return at Warwick recently. Looked likely to land those bets until run down close to the finish. Jockey Rex Dingle is one of the season’s finds and he will know to save a little extra this time. Looks well treated up just 4lbs.
Solar Impulse, (1530 Wetherby), 15/2: won a Grand Annual for Paul Nicholls in 2016 off 140, but the trainer must have known how badly handicapped he had become with the horse moving on at the end of that season rated 149. Two poor seasons for the small yard of Christopher Kellett saw him drop to around 120 off which he started to finally look competitive. Has now switched to the excellent Ian Williams, a master at improving new arrivals, and may be worth risking on stable debut.
Magic Dragon, (1600 Wetherby), 9/2: left behind some very quiet maiden runs when springing a 25/1 shock at Sedgefield in his first handicap. Only up 5lbs, and this ought to be a stiffer task, but probably had more in hand than he showed last time and can double up.
