NAP OF THE DAY: Moratorium, (1515 Punchestown), 1pt win, 11/2 generally available
This Pertemps qualifier is much watched for Cheltenham clues and it looks like they will abound again. Our eyes will be glued to Tin Soldier for the connections of previous Final winners Mall Dini and Presenting Percy. This horse looked one to follow when finishing well in the 2018 Coral Cup for Mullins with this trip sure to suit better. His subsequent 3rd here was golden form, but injury means we haven’t seen him in 18 months. He has to run well here to qualify, but winning may not be good for the rating so watch carefully. Ones who really do need a win to lift their rating to Finals class are Moratorium, It’s All Guesswork and Mormon. We prefer the Gigginstown pair and although Mormon has the edge on recent Tramore form, it’s Moratorium who might be improving faster after two subsequent wins.
Insult, (1405 Punchestown), 6/4: given the high regard we are giving Moratorium and Mormon in the 1515 race, then we have to like Insult who split the pair at Tramore finishing like the wind having taken an age to understand he was a racehorse. Some fair types should stop him trading odds-on here, but any improvement should see him home easily under the excellent Rachael Blackmore.
Burn Baby Byrne, (1710 Ludlow), 15/2: has quickly become a course regular recording one smooth win and some good performances since off a raised mark. Trainer’s daughter Isabel gets on well with this mare and she’ll have conditions to suit. Could do with being held on to for a bit longer in her races, and provided there is some pace here then she can benefit from a more nuanced ride.
Zorawar, (1945 Chelmsford), 9/4: has been lumped up 11lbs for a sauntering win at Wolves, and was unable to defy a 4lb lower mark here last time. But he was unlucky there and this step back in trip should help his smooth travelling style. May have another win before the ratings start to catch up.
