It’s the Players Championship this week – golf’s unofficial ‘fifth’ major, held at the prestigious TPC Sawgrass course in Florida.
As part of a rejigging of the PGA Tour golfing schedule this event has been moved back to March from May. The weather is likely to be a little cooler as a result and this may affect the way the course plays.
That said, it’s straight hitters, not necessarily bombers, that the course favours. Past winners have included the likes of Matt Kuchar, Tim Clark and KJ Choi, none of whom hit the ball very far off the tee. In fact, defending champion Webb Simpson largely falls into that category.
And if we’re talking straight hitters then Matthew Fitzpatrick springs to mind. The young Englishman finished runner up last week at Bay Hill, so clearly is playing well, and has the additional bonus of top caddie Billy Foster on his bag. At a large price we’ll take a punt.
Continuing the theme that form is important, our win bet will be on Francisco Molinari. The Italian won at Bay Hill in style and has clearly proved himself as one of the game’s elite with his exploits over the last year or so. We’re a little worried that last week would’ve taken something out of him, but he did win back to back last year when he clinched the Open title.
Fitzpatrick 0.5 pts each way at 75/1, 1/4 the odds for top six places, bet365
Molinari to win, 1 pt, at 25/1, Unibet
