PGA Tour: Kokrak-ing the whip…

It’s the week before the first Major, the Masters, and the PGA Tour heads to TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open.

The par-72 course stretches over 7,400 yards with the greens set to be quick and difficult to hit given the likely windy conditions (we are in Texas!).

There are only 17 players set to take part who have already booked their presence at Augusta, and this means the top of the betting has an unusual look to it.

Favourite for the event is Rickie Fowler. Talented as he undoubtedly is, we feel he doesn’t win enough to merit his short price. Jordan Speith is also listed high up, and he will have plenty of home support, but we can’t take him on current form. Matt Kuchar is obviously playing well, but getting to the WGC Dell Match Play final will have been tiring, and he’s not a youngster any more. We like the look of Tony Finau, but one PGA win to date doesn’t suggest 16/1 is a price with value.

Instead, we’re going to look further down the betting list. Jason Kokrak has had six top 20 finishes already this year, including three top 10s in his last four starts. It’s true he hasn’t won yet, but with this sort of form the first victory may be just around the corner. We’ll side with him and keep some powder dry for the weekend if he’s not in contention.

Recommendation: Kokrak 0.5 pts each way at 28/1, 1/5 the odds for the first eight places, Boyle Sports
