NAP OF THE DAY: Exec Chef, (1515 Newbury), 2pts win, 8/1 generally available
Looks a wide open field but this race is so often determined by the Doncaster form from a few weeks back. The key is that the ground here is much softer, so a soft ground lover who proved themselves at Donny is the target. Step forward Exec Chef, who won well here on slow ground last year and take a blinder to chase home a well handicapped winner of the Lincoln consolation race. This is a higher class, but with the ground in his favour he can go one better here.
Forest Bihan, (1325 Ayr), 9/1: has done most of his winning on this kind of ground and enjoys a sharp track. Considering that, he ran a blinder at Cheltenham when fourth in the Grand Annual on softer ground. Has a big weight but has earned that, and may just be able to give the weight away on this quicker surface.
Malaya, (1425 Ayr), 9/1: plenty in here have a bit to prove, but Malaya comes here hot off a win in the Imperial Cup. Only 6lbs higher which is pretty generous as this young mare may still be improving, made a bad late error but still won, and is trained by a genius who does so well at this meeting.
Big River, (1535 Ayr), 10/1: The Scottish National can be tricky with some contenders looking for consolation after other events and others having targeted this. We like a targeted horse, and home town contender Big River looks to have been laid out for this. His challenge will be jumping fluently and staying in contention. He didn’t do that at Cheltenham last time, but rarely has a horse passed as many rivals as he did as he absolutely flew home at the death for fourth. That finishing effort pointed at a marathon trip like this, he just needs to be within 20 lengths turning in and he can surge home with his late overdrive.
