NAP OF THE DAY: Gopsies Daughter, (1420 Curragh), 1pt win, 11/2:
OK, here we go again with no so much the Top of the Pops as Top of the Flops, as Gops gets napped for a third time this season, having bombed out the other twice. A frustrating mare she has hinted at so much more and this could finally be the day. Admittedly all 5 career wins are at 5f, but she has run well at 6f and this firm ground should help. She stayed on well here at this trip two runs ago and has been running with conspicuous promise under a 10lb claimer this year. Now she is reunited with the useful 3lb claim of the more experienced Killian Leonard who rode her to three wins last season, and looks set to run her best from a stand side draw.
Just Wonderful, (1625 Curragh), 5/1: went off the No 1 choice for Aidan O’Brian in the Newmarket 1000G but could only finish 6th and is deserted by jockey more for all the way Guineas winner Hermosa. That makes logical sense but Just Wonderful may not have had the best of the draw and the run that time and may spring a surprise here and reverse that form. Iridessa may be the other surprise packet but may need a longer trip.
Crotchet, (1700 Curragh), 4/1: its hugely tempting to pick the useful Atlas to provide a memorable double for our friends who also own Gopsies, but the eighth furlong may be a challenge. In contrast it should be ideal for Crotchet who has run well in two soft ground 7f runs since import from the UK. This faster ground mile is ideal and she can defy top weight for her new trainer.
Shakespear’sgalley, (1730 Curragh), 7/2: showed very little for a well bred horse until handicap debut when raised to 2m off just 62 when a classy winner at Killarney. Raised a generous 6lbs and gets another 3lbs as he’s out of the handicap here. Alan Persse claims a handy 7lbs and he can continue a sequence by taking this.
