In the early hours of Sunday morning Anthony Joshua defends his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz Jr. at Madison Square Garden in New York.
This is Joshua’s US debut and he will be keen to impress the American audience, particularly with a bout against Deontay Wilder likely in the near future.
Ruiz took this fight late in the day after Jarrel Miller failed a drugs test. He weighed in at over 19 stone, almost two stone heavier than Joshua, and looked like not much of that extra weight was muscle!
Joshua has a reach advantage, a height advantage, is fitter and looks quicker. Heavyweights always have a puncher’s chance, but surely this fight is only going one way.
We think Joshua will be well aware of the impact Wilder’s first round win over Dominic Breazeale in mid May had on the heavyweight scene, and think he will try and replicate.
We’ll take the Briton to win in round one, with a saver on him winning in rounds 1-3 in case he starts cautiously on his US debut.
Joshua to win in round one, 1 pt, at 10/1, William Hill
Joshua to win in rounds 1-3, 1 pt, at 3/1, William Hill
