Wednesday Yankee: Unbelievable Jeff…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Where’s Jeff, (1600 Carlisle), 1pt win, 6/1:

The historic Cumberland Plate looks set up for the Easterby family. Favourite Appointed is officially 2lbs well in after sauntering yo a win at Ripon last week but drying ground may not be ideal for her. Where’s Jeff has good form on stiff finishes like this and did well at sharper York to go close in a ladies race recently. A mark of 77 looks generous being only 3lbs above his winning Beverley mark. He can take this valuable prize.

Redarna, (1500 Carlisle), 5/1: missed qualifying for today’s Carlisle Bell by one spot leaving him top-weight here. That also leaves trainer Dianne Sayer with her eggs in one basket as she also has the progressive Jackhammer in here too. Both should go well, but regular jockey to both horses, Mulrennan, picks Redarna and we shall follow suit.

Al Erayg, (1530 Carlisle), 4/1: looks the subject of a huge gamble here and easy to see why. Struggled to find his feet coming here from France in the middle of last season but was a massive eye catcher running on at Chester in seasonal debut. On the face of it he disappointed next time but the 7f round Thirsk looked sharp enough. This looks a lot more suitable and the market whispers are of Brian Blessed decibel level.

Hors De Combat, (1550 Salisbury), 12/1: ok so one win in 5 years is not exactly ironclad credentials. That said this veteran has finally dropped to a better mark, 5lbs below last year’s winning Meydan mark and 8lbs lower than when 6th in last year’s Hunt Cup. It is worth forgiving a blow out at Epsom last time as he never looked at home, but his previous 5th at Newbury was a decent effort. He gets Oisin in the saddle and drops in class to give weight away to lesser horses.
