Tuesday Yankee: Command performance?…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Victory Command, (1615 Hamilton), 1pt win, 7/2:

Trainer Mark Johnston is in characteristic Summer blitz mode, and his 3yos are particularly effective in handicaps at this time. Victory Command has yet to win this season mainly a result of running at the highest level. His 6th of 30 in Royal Ascot’s Britannia was a superb effort last time, finishing 2nd in his group. This is a step down in class and he looks set to break his season’s duck.

Mondain, (1645 Hamilton), 7/4: another Johnston 3yo and one who is coming here off the back of a fluent win over 12f last time. That in itself should be enough for a winning chance here, but the extra 2f looks likely to unlock even more improvement.

Air Of York, (1800 Chepstow), 9/1: into a clutch of improving Johnston 3yos we’ll pitch a super-exposed 7yo making his 101st appearance. In truth, Air Of York is a properly moody inconsistent type, but he likes this track and was conspicuous in his lightning finish at the end of 6f here last week. The extra furlong should suit and he has the ability to win this – if he wants to.

Message, (2030 Chepstow), 7/2: another Johnston 3yo, making the long trip to Chepstow. On his Donny 2nd he’d have a huge chance here. He was since beaten a mile in second at Brighton, but that winner was absolutely thrown in, and his defeat last time on the all weather was better than it reads. A return to Donny form looks likely, and with that, the win.
