Tuesday Yankee: Pray to Mecca…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Mecca’s Gift, (1645 Pontefract), 1pt win, 2/1:

Plenty of these have potential to improve, but Mecca’s Gift has beaten them to the punch with a runaway win last week. A 6lb penalty will be much less than the rise she will get for that and she is surely well in. That was first time blinkers and they will need to weave the magic again, but this 3yo filly has only had 8 runs and her improvement is as likely to be organic as it is blinker-related.

The Ginger Bullet, (1415 Pontefract), 6/1: an early nursery and these 2yo handicaps are notoriously difficult given the scant form and capacity to improve. That said the big yards of Hannon and Fahey are well represented by two unexposed sorts. Lexington Quest has run three fair races, but the late progress over a shorter trip of Fahey’s The Ginger Bullet is the more persuasive, and a good draw helps.

Clon Coulis, (1515 Pontefract), 9/4: won this Listed race last year and was in lifetime best form when narrowly failing in her last to first bid for Royal Ascot’s Hunt Cup last time. Has to beat a 1000G winner in Billesdon Brook, but that win looks even more of a shock now than it did on the day, and whilst still useful at this level, she looks worth taking on.

Ventura Ocean, (1545 Pontefract), 5/1: We’ve been on favourite Tommy Taylor a few times and know how hard he can be to win on, backing him when he’s a big price makes sense but not at these odds. Instead it may be worth chancing Ventura Ocean who has won both his runs here including earlier this season. Was terrible in two runs since, but they were at York, chalk to Ponty’s cheese, and he may just be able to bounce back here.
