NAP OF THE DAY: Tis Marvellous, (1345 Ascot), 1pt win, 6/1:
This sprint is big on numbers but we think boils down to two. Eeh Bah Gum is a blog favourite and will win one of these soon, but perhaps not today. Instead this looks set up for Tis Marvellous. He landed our nap when winning over this course and distance last Summer off a mark of 100, and burst back to his best here again last time over the 6f of the Wokingham off 101 when beating all bar the thrown in Cape Byron. Raised just 2lbs for that to 103, he looks on a winning mark on that form with the step back to 5f likely to suit.
Solar Gold (1530 Newmarket), 6/1: trainer William Haggas has been in flying form with a 30% strike rate in the last two weeks. He is adept at improving horses and he inherited this filly at the start of the season. She last ran in a handicap last year when winning at Bath and a 20lb higher mark asks plenty, but he runs in listed races since have been full of promise and this could be a shrewd step back into handicap company, where the style of race could suit. Market support is invariably a good pointer for this yard and there has been plenty of that in recent days.
Pivoine (1550 York), 14/1: Stylehunter was an eyecatcher at Ascot, but he has been well found by the market and hasn’t yet encountered the Marmite track at York. Pivoine however was an impressive winning nap for us over this course and distance last Summer. Hasn’t had much chance to show his best this year being out if his depth but running respectably in Group 3 races, before a disappointing non-staying effort over a longer trip at Ascot on softer ground last time. Back here, back on fast ground, back at this trip, and down in the weights he looks excellent value to surge back to his best.
Assembled (1710 Ascot), 5/1: the lone 3yo, and as such the runner here with by far the most scope for improvement. Won well on his last maiden start and a mark of 77 looks likely to prove very generous. The step back to a stiff 7f should help and he can spike the guns of warm favourite Rux Ruxx who had to bring Carlisle and Catterick form to Ascot.
