Sunday Yankee: The full Ponty…

After the class of Ascot and York and Newmarket yesterday, it’s over to trusty Pontefract for today’s action…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Johnny Cavagin, (1740 Pontefract), 1pt win, 7/2:

This 10yo veteran has found his form again this season. He likes it here with lifetime course form of 164112321, and goes well in soft ground should the forecast rain arrive. Jockey Graham Lee knows him well, and he can outclass this weak field off top-weight.

Regal Mirage, (1520 Pontefract), 5/1: a tight handicap, but Tim Easterby’s 5yo looks the most attractive option. He has been bumping along picking up minor placings this year and barely moving from today’s mark of 70. That said, Haydock last time looked a stronger performance and he could be ready to deliver here with all conditions in his favour.

I Could Do Better, (1555 Pontefract), 6/1: a tricky Listed race in which there are serious doubts about each contender. At the odds, the value has to lie with the unbeaten I Could Do Better. He will need to live up to his name as on official ratings he has up to a stone to find, but he didn’t break sweat in his two wins this season, having beaten the top class King Of Comedy in his only 2yo run. Could still be anything and could spring a minor surprise.

Magical Effect, (1630 Pontefract), 5/1: an age old form dilemma here with Magical Effect 4lbs better off with Tricky Dicky despite beating him narrowly here just a couple of weeks ago. Dicky won well on Friday at York so may be capable of better and is super consistent. Magical Effect is less consistent but has won of this kind of mark before. We’ll trust the form to pan out and a repeat win for Magical Effect.
