Well, we hoped yesterday’s 2pt nap Mr Adjudicator wouldn’t come off the bridle – and he didn’t, but he still came fourth. Being boxed in is part and parcel of Galway’s quirky tight turns, and we had our fair share of bad luck yesterday. Goodwood isn’t much better in that department, but hopefully we’ll get better breaks today….
The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Numerian, (1940 Galway), 1pt win, 4/1:
This Joseph O’Brien 3yo ran exclusively on the all weather until making his turf debut in the ultra competitive Britannia handicap at Royal Ascot. Although well beaten he got no luck and did well to scramble home for fifth. That looks the best form on offer and he has a nice draw here. Jockey Donnacha will be sweating as he is in here at a weight 2lbs below his minimum, but we see that as a sign of confidence that connections are potentially happy to see him compete under an extra couple of pounds.
Soto Sizzler, (1350 Goodwood), 9/1: has a win here last year to his name and has been in flying form this season with two easy wins in big Epsom handicaps. Has arguably been lightly treated up 10lbs in total for those wins and can be excused a defeat on the all weather last time behind a potentially decent winner. Back on turf he can regain the winning thread. This is a shorter trip, but it should be run at a pace that brings Soto’s stamina into play, and jockey Oisin Murphy can be trusted to have him well positioned.
Maygold, (1645 Goodwood), 13/2: some interesting ones here with class dropper Muthmir a likely sort but forecast rain could be his undoing. Instead it’s worth backing the biggest improver in the field in the 4yo filly Maygold. She won her only race here, and was very impressive on soft at Salisbury last time. She keeps going up in the weights but she is a strong filly who has always looked likely to be a big improver with age. Forecast rain will only improve her chance.
Infanta Isabella, (1715 Goodwood), 14/1: a good fillies handicap where Savannah looks interesting under Frankie. But Isabella was a stunning improver on soft at Newbury recently. She has gone up for that but still ran well at Lingfield on faster ground last time. Has apprentice sensation Fallon claiming a golden 5lbs and hopefully plenty of rain will have gotten into the ground by this last race of the card.
