PGA Tour: Rose set to blossom…

This week sees the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs, with the top 125 players (122 in reality as three have declined their invites) lining up at the Liberty National Golf Course in New Jersey for the Northern Trust tournament.

It’s hard to look past Brooks Koepka when these big tournaments come around, especially with his dominant win across the border in New York at the US PGA Championship earlier this year, but he already leads the FedEx Cup rankings and the motivation to improve his position isn’t there.

Rory McIlroy has also had a good season, just looking at his numbers. But we were disappointed with his closing round two weeks ago when in contention and we’ll pass this week.

Instead we’re going to side with Justin Rose. It hasn’t been a great year for the Englishman, but he finished tied third in the US Open and was in contention for the Open Championship until the conditions blew him away on the final day. He claimed the FedEx Cup bonus last year and the layout of the course should suit his ball striking.

Our second selection is Matthew Wolff. He was our each way pick last week and nearly came off, with bogies at his last two holes scuppering his chances. The young American is extremely talented, and crucially lies in the cut off spot in the FedEx rankings for next week’s tournament, in 70th spot. This means he has to perform this week to continue onwards.

Recommendations:

Rose to win, 1 pt, at 20/1, widely available

Wolff 0.5 pts each way at 100/1, 1/5 the odds for the first six places, Unibet
