The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Numerian, (1800 Curragh), 2pts win, 9/2:
We were very keen on this guy in the Irish Cambridgeshire here recently when he stayed on well for a close third. The second there won a valuable Leopardstown event yesterday, and the extra distance is likely to suit Joseph O’Brien’s 3yo. He can take this on route to a possible crack at the Newmarket Cambridgeshire.
Make A Challenge, (1320 Curragh), 6/1: managed to win twice in a week at the Galway festival and then shrugged of a weight rise by winning over this course and distance. He is up a further 4lb for that narrow win, but he travelled into the race in style even if he scrambled home in the end. That ability to cruise will be crucial in this big field and the 7lbs claimed by his jockey can help keep him on a winning mark.
Soffia, (1425 Curragh), 5/2: Edward Lynam’s filly is on the rapid improve having run up a hat-trick of recent wins. Several strong English raiders oppose, but Soffia had the beating of Soldiers Call here last time and that would have her ahead of the rest here.
Cross Counter, (1610 Curragh), 5/2: the Irish St Leger provides a chance for Charlie Appleby’s star stayed to open his European account. Won the Melbourne Cup and in Dubai before two turf defeats this summer behind the incomparable Stradivarius at Ascot and Goodwood. This step back in trip should help as will a strong gallop. Plenty of Irish potential stayers in opposition but nothing brings credentials anything like as strong as Cross Counter.
