The European Tour heads up to Scotland this week, with the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship taking place on three of the country’s most prestigious courses – St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
The pro-am format of this tournament suggests that those players who are more gregarious/patient in nature will have an advantage as they accompany a celebrity 15 handicapper into the nearest gorse, stream or pot bunker.
One such player is Shane Lowry. Throw in the fact that links is his favourite form of golf (he did win the Open Championship in July), he’s clearly in form after finishing 11th last weekend at Wentworth and he will be keen to play well in these important end of season tournaments as they count highly towards next year’s Ryder Cup, and he sounds like a clear pick for us.
Lowry is best priced at 18/1 for the tournament, but SkyBet is offering 15/1 without the top four in the betting – Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. These four talented players make up around 40% of the book, suggesting Lowry should be priced around 12/1. He’s not, and the hefty premium offered means we’ll put two points on the Irishman.
Recommendation: Lowry to win, without McIlroy, Rahm, Rose and Fleetwood, 2 pts, at 15/1, SkyBet
