Friday Yankee: Shout out with Glee…

Some good horses at Ascot today with Irish raider Debuchet catching the eye, but heavy ground there can be hard to assess so we will just watch the action to get ready for tomorrow’s big card.  In the meantime we’ll head to the beach … Southwell sands !!

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY:   Gleeful,  (1335 Southwell), 1pt win, 5/1:

She was a bit frustrating going close often off this mark through the Summer.  Ground down a decent rival to win a maiden here on her first try on this surface.  Handicapper has left her broadly where she’s been, but there is an argument that her breeding supports potential to be improved on this track in which case she is a juicy price.

Directory, (1445 Southwell), 5/2:   Another who seems to have his mark under normal conditions, but his one appearance here was a runaway win.  Only 5lbs higher and he could be one of those who really takes to this unusual surface.  We’ll find out today and are happy to take this price to do so.

Bodacious Name, (1550 Southwell), 11/2:  a win machine is favourite here unpenalised for a recent win, but new to this extreme trip and importantly to this surface.  That makes for value elsewhere and it’s hard to see why Bodacious Name shouldn’t be at least clear second favourite having worn down rival Shine Baby Shine here last time and with proven ability over these marathon trips.

Bond Angel, (1650 Southwell), 18/1:  this is a race deep with in form horses with Jazz Hands looking best of the market leaders.  But this could be a good time to revisit Bond Angel.  This filly was in fine form off this kind of mark early this year and even won here off just 2lb lower as recently as October.  Her last few runs may have looked below par, but she didn’t run too badly last time when running very wide under an inexperienced jockey.  Joey Haynes takes the ride now and knows her well.  She looks nicely drawn and she can outrun odds that look far too big.
