The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Gwencily Berbas, (1550 Thurles), 1pt win, 8/1:
He was potentially decent in the past, but last year was a write off. That has left him well handicapped if he can rediscover his best. There were signs of that with a 4th in the Munster National, but things haven’t worked out with an unlucky brought down and then a blow out over the Aintree fences. This race should be more suitable and the 5lb claim of the excellent Conor McNamara is a gift.
Polished Steel, (1410 Thurles), 10/1: we backed this guy a few times last season but unfortunately ran out of patience before his long priced win in a 25 runner Punchestown festival handicap. Has shown nothing yet this year but is now just 5lbs above that festival mark. Jockey Robbie Power is a welcome sight and he did hit form around this time last season. Looks a fair price in this company.
Diamond Brig, (1425 Ayr), 4/1: a very useful hunter chaser who registered an impressive win on soft ground in 2018. Made a belated return to the track after 18mths off in a debut handicap last time when running well before justifiably tiring late on. Will need to be a lot fitter today, but the trainer is in decent form and jockey Brian Hughes is a man possessed.
Aloomomo, (1510 Ayr), 6/4: we took this fella on at short odds last time given his poor win record, but the switch to the yard of Sandy Thompson has worked the oracle and he was a very easy winner. Went off 3/1 fav for a Cheltenham Festival handicap in his youth off a 23lb higher mark. He may not be back at that level but he should have enough of the old fire to follow up that return to winning ways.
