NAP OF THE DAY: Samara Bay, (1245 Beverley), 1pt win, 12/1:
Prior experience is a massive advantage in these early 2yo maiden races, even more so on a tricky track like Beverley. All the fancied horses here make debuts, and Samara Bay may be too long in the market. She hails from a top Yorkshire yard and has had a run when prominent for much of the way over a stiff 6f at Newcastle. She can put that to use, along with a super draw, and if she is quickly away she could have this in the bag before the penny drops with her newbie rivals.
Broughtons Gold, (1440 Newbury), 7/1: there’s little wrong with the idea of backing everything red-hot trainer Tom Clover runs right now. This colt gives added scope for support having run particularly well in his two races last year. A mark of 71 looks kind and the booking of Atzeni is eye catching.
Mere Catherine, (1600 Gowran), 4/1: the Dermot Weld stable has been a little slow to start, but this filly should be the benchmark of where they are at. She showed lots of promise last year until a below par effort on heavy ground. She’ll need further in time, but she looks so well in off just 72 that she is irresistible on reappearance.
Roundabout Magic (1810 Lingfield), 5/1: a real regular here with 6 of his 7 lifetime wins over this course and distance. Ran well here a few days ago, and is probably a decent price due to his poor draw here, but he likes to be dropped out and come with a late run, there are pacesetters to set it up, and expect him to use the traditional last bend wide slingshot to good effect.
