PGA Tour: The Champion and The Legend…

This week sees the start of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, one of the most prestigious tournaments of the season, outside of the Majors.

The restrictions placed on the game in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak means this is the second week in a row that this course has been used on the PGA, an unprecedented occurrence. That said, the tournament officials have said that they will make this week’s set up more difficult.

So how do we play this? Are four rounds the previous week an invaluable warm up for this week, or are fresh players who don’t have the scars of battle the way to go forward?

A bit of both is how we’re going to approach the tournament!

Patrick Cantlay is the defending champion. He knows the course and has good memories of the place. He played last week, finishing strongly, but didn’t tee off in the final groups and so should be relatively fresh mentally.

Our second win selection is a player who has an incredible record at the course – Tiger Woods. The legend has won here five times. He comes into the tournament after a long injury break, not necessarily a good thing, but this means he’s a hefty price. We’ll take a punt.

Our third pick is Shane Lowry. The genial Irishman would be defending his Open title this week at Royal St. George’s if the coronavirus stayed away, but he lines up at this venue instead.

He plays best on tough courses, has proved his mettle at this time of the year and has the short game to do well. We’ll try him each way.

Recommendations:

Cantlay to win, 1 pt, at 14/1, widely available

Woods to win, 1 pt, at 25/1, widely available

Lowry 0.5 pts each way at 125/1, 1/5 the odds for the first eight places, William Hill
