The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Jonah Jones, (1445 York), 2pts win, 3/1:
Not all horses take to Ascot and whilst we made this guy a big nap last time his third was a little disappointing. He was never going sweetly there albeit he ground it out for a place. A quick 6f here may suit better than that stiff 5f, and the booking of a flying Frankie looks the icing on the cake.
Aplomb, (1335 Ascot), 7/1: a nice race here with recent easy Sandown winner Magic J seeking to confirm superiority over Konchek. The handicapper has given him a sharp rise and this is a very different track. Course specialists Mountain Peak and Aplomb make more appeal at the prices. There was a length or so between them in a good race here last time, but the summer rains getting into the ground may suit Aplomb that little bit better and he can exert his revenge.
Firmament, (1410 York), 5/1: plenty of old rogues in here and it was very tempting to go with one blog regular in the consistent Presidential, but instead we are being duped again by that old rogue Firmament. He rarely wins, but if he does then it’s here. He was slightly disappointing over a rain softened mile here last time, but this trip with regular jockey Tudhope back in the saddle looks ideal as he slips back at last to his winning mark of 93. One last chance old friend….
Mars Landing, (1650 Ascot), 9/4: a cracking little race and it’s a sign of the promise Mars Landing showed on reappearance at Newbury that he trades as a short priced favourite in this company, and yet we think he should be shorter still. He ran a blinder that day making up a huge amount of ground to go down as a close second. That form is already working out well and he should make no mistake here under top jock Moore.
