World Snooker: Gould Standard

The first round of the Snooker World Championships threw up numerous shocks but not always where we anticipated.

One of our first round fancies Martin Gould did indeed upset the odds with a comprehensive dismissal of Stephen Maguire.

His reward for his endeavor is a second round showdown with Kyren Wilson who had a walkover in the first round. This can be taken two ways but we believe he will be short of match sharpness and the 2/1 about a victory for the “Pinner Potter” looks too hard to overlook.

He scored extremely heavily and looked in great touch all round in the most comprehensive victory of any in the first round.

He admitted to coming close to retirement but with the arrival of lockdown came a renewed focus that is reaping dividends on the baize.

Elsewhere another shock first round winner Jamie Clarke looks incredible value against Anthony McGill to repeat the heroics after beating Mark Allen in a thrilling high quality affair.

A reproduction of that form will surely see him go close and he is a tempting price at 11/5 to win outright. The Evens available +3.5 frames in the handicap is another avenue to play for the more conservative punter.
