Thursday Yankee: Top can Rank highly…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Top Rank, (1445 York), 1pt win, 10/3:

A strong handicap and from one perspective Top Rank looks a short price.  That said he has never been beaten and crushed his opponents last time.  Quality rivals Sir Busker, Montatham and Prompting present a challenge but the handicapper has seen plenty of them whereas Top Rank remains something of a mystery and we expect we won’t see the bubble burst quite yet.

Battered, (1655 Chester), 6/1:  a nice handicap where last week’s winner Revich would have a chance if he lasts the extra trip.  No trip fears for Battered, and his return at Goodwood recently was pretty promising.  He gets a generous drop in the weights, a workable draw, and goes well with the ground on the soft side.

Gabrial The Saint, (1830 Chester), 13/2:  favourite Rayong is the obvious improver here, but his good low draw could be a problem if he doesn’t get away quickly.  Gabrial The Saint is a regular here with two course wins.  He was given a super aggressive ride here over 7f last week, fading late on.  He is drawn to attack again over this shorter trip and he can hang on this time.

Penwortham, (1930 Chester), 8/1:  was a nap for us here last week and it was a total disaster.  Has to be held up off a strong pace but he pulled himself through to the front rank and burnt out quickly.  Is capable of much better if things fall more favourably tactically, and whilst usually a 7f horse he has a good run here on his only prior 6f effort and he will at least be assured of a rapid early pace.  With cut on the ground he could be a lively outsider to mow them down late on.
