Caleb Ewan duly produced a scintillating finish for his second stage victory of the Tour on Wednesdays Stage 11, typically on one of the flat stages we finally decided not to suggest the pint sized Australian for victory !!
It was a superb finish to the day with Sam Bennett extending his lead in the Green Jersey through Peter Sagans demotion for over the top aggression.
Moving on to Stage 12 and aggressive riding looks to be a likely approach for many as the peloton tackles the longest stage of this years Tour.
The profile is ideal for a breakaway with rolling terrain sure to interest many strongmen and dissuade the GC from keeping tabs on them.
And when it comes to strongmen look no further than Classic specialist Greg Van Avermaet. The Belgian’s versatility has seen him to the fore across so many races and he is a standout pick to claim today’s stage. The 2016 Olympic Champion will be licking his lips at the profile awaiting on Thursday with so many undulations over the extended 218km.
His ability to climb well and turn a big gear on the flat make him a prime contender for victory. Added to that he has looked in imperious form, pushing hard from the front deep into Stage 11 making him a headline selection.
There are others who are worthy of consideration with Matej Mohoric, Matteo Trentin, Thomas DeGendt and stage favourite Julian Alaphilippe sure to be to the fore but everything looks ideal for GVA to make a big play.
Greg Van Avermaet to win Stage 12, 2pts win, 12/1
