NAP OF THE DAY: Wise Counsel, (1540 Ayr), 1pt win, 10/1:
The feature race, the Ayr Gold Cup, and our old rogue Arecibo turns out again, but when his jockey Danny Tudhope has switched off him, then it’s clearly high time we did the same. In fact, following Tudhope makes sense. He picks up the ride on the useful Wise Counsel who won at this meeting last year. He ran well on his return at Goodwood and pretty well over 7f at Ascot. A fast run 6f could be ideal and a middle to high draw looks preferable on the evidence of the week to date and given some pacesetters on that side.
Kingbrook, (1415 Newbury), 10/1: a valuable handicap in which trainer John Gosden always has to be respected and his Tenbury Wells is a worthy favourite. But wherever he finishes lightly raced Kingbrook should be very close, being 3lb better for less than 2l at Sandown last time. He didn’t get much luck there on what was a belated seasonal debut, and the benefit of the run, some better luck and the weight change can make the difference.
Rathbone, (1430 Ayr), 10/1: hot favourite King’s Lynn has to overcome inexperience and a potentially stranded draw in the low numbers with bags of pace drawn high. He could be good enough but not for us at these odds. Instead the high drawn Rathbone appeals having shown terrific promise at Ascot on his return from a recent wind operation. He didn’t run well here last year but arrived in poor form then, and this looks to be arriving at just the right time.
Brunch, (1615 Ayr), 9/4: we are huge fans of Brunch, in every way. The equine version has been bringing home the bacon this season with an impressive win at York last time the latest success. He can outpace the handicapper’s grip and this looks at his mercy.
