Longchamp Yankee: Tasty French fancies….

A huge day in Paris, but with very heavy ground and all the O’Brien runners pulled, there looks scope for some huge surprises on a day made for some each way fun…

The Daily (each way) Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY:  Irska, (1655 Longchamp), 1pt ew, 33/1:

Some obviously strong contenders at the head of the market but they may not be so far ahead on this heavy ground to avoid a shock outcome.  The form of Irska’s win over two useful UK runners last time is pretty fair.  She loves the heavy ground, stays further than this, and gets the maximum allowances as a 3yo filly.  She should be half her current price, if not shorter still.

Sottsass, (1505 Longchamp), 13/2:  A much weakened Arc is at the mercy of two time winning legend Enable.  She should justify her short price, but it’s worth noting that as a 6yo she would be defying a powerful age trend.  The same is true of stayer stablemate Stradivarius, and with the 3yos decimated, it’s home challenger Sottsass that makes the most sense.  He was third in the race last year and needs to find a couple of lengths on Enable, but he should be getting better at 4 as she diminishes at 6.  He handles the ground, is nicely drawn and looks a good price as the only real conceivable threat to the super-mare.

Grand Glory, (1550 Longchamp), 40/1:  another race with a worthy favourite albeit Alpine Star may be fractionally better as a miler on this ground.  Grand Glory was very disappointing here last time, but that was 12f on good, whereas her best has been on very soft at this trip.  She may just run well above her odds under Frankie.

Sestilio Jet, (1625 Longchamp), 40/1:  one thing previous runnings of this race on heavy ground tell us is that anything is possible and that a low draw can be crucial. This horse is clearly not good enough under most circumstances and hence is the rank outsider, but his 8th in this last year was ok, his best form is on heavy ground, and he has a favourable draw.  He’s a massive price but has sneaky each way appeal.
