The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Red Derek, (1548 Haydock), 1pt win, 8/1:
Favourite Trumpet Man is a typical Johnston trainer improver going for a hat trick. But the handicapper has noticed those wins and his form with Red Derek makes us wonder how they can be priced so differently. On soft ground here Derek came out ahead, but was then 6l behind the fav last time on quicker ground. It’s back to a soft surface today and Derek is a massive 14lbs better off for that last defeat.
Cuban Breeze, (1240 Haydock), 9/4: not many in here likely to handle this heavy ground but Cuban Breeze brings experience, winning form and a proven ability on soft ground. Ran a close second just last week when well clear of the rest and is 4lb well in by running again before the new rating kicks in. Has tactical early speed that is always crucial here and should defy top weight against rivals who are yet to show much promise in these conditions.
Hyperfocus, (1345 Haydock), 5/1: has form figures here of 1131, always on soft or heavy ground. His most recent win was a cosy one here in September and a 4lb higher looks well within his grasp. Ran poorly last time, but back on a track that so evidently suits his prominent racing style and on ground few handle as well as he does and he has every chance of picking back up that winning thread.
Mascat, (1448 Haydock), 5/1: a wide open race, but we are keen to side with a 3yo and with the Beckett stable in fine form Mascat just gets the nod over Brentford Hope. This step down in trip having looked a it of a soft finisher at middle distances looks a tactically wise step and he seemed to handle soft ground at Newmarket a few runs back. Tom Marquand is in the middle of a career-defining season and this could be another win on his road to the very top.
