The final major of this Covid-affected year, the US Masters, starts on Thursday, and we’ve already outlined our reasons for selecting Dustin Johnson to claim the famed green jacket.
However, the winner of the event is not the only bet available for gamblers to take a punt on. Another market that we’re going to dabble in is the top English golfer.
Favourite for this market this week is Tyrrell Hatton, who has been in prime form on the PGA Tour. However, he has a poor record around Augusta, only breaking par on one occasion from 10 rounds played. He may well improve on that record, but at 3/1 we won’t take the chance.
Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood have played well around here, but all arrive with major question marks around their form. Danny Willett only gets into the field because of his shock victory in 2016, Matt Wallace missed the cut on his debut, while Ian Poulter has been struggling with a back injury.
This leaves Lee Westwood, and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
Westy has a good record in the Masters, including seven top-20s in his last eight tournaments, and may well have a chance, but we’re reluctant to bet on a player rapidly approaching his 50s.
Fitzpatrick has only missed the cut here once, as an amateur, and has since finished 7th, 32nd, 38th and 21st, leading the fields in greens in regulation in 2016. He putts very well, and the only thing stopping us from considering him for the overall title is his comparative lack of length off the tee.
Fitzpatrick to be top Englishman, 1 pt, at 6/1, bet365
