The golf on the European Tour starts a day early this week, as the Fire Course on the Jumeirah Golf Estates hosts the Golf in Dubai Championship.
This course is making its Tour debut, and includes a layout with five par-five holes, which make us think that length off the tee will be an advantage. However, four of the par fours are sub-400 yards, suggesting a good putting stroke is also required.
With all this in mind we’re going to side with Tom Lewis. The young Englishman has been trying his luck on the PGA Tour for most of 2020, including shooting a 61 in the St. Jude Invitational, showing he knows how to record low numbers. He finished seventh and sixth at the neighbouring Earth Course in the last two runnings, and has also recorded top 10 finishes in both the Abu Dhabi Championship and Saudi International last year.
Our second selection is Romain Wattel. The French professional defines mercurial – you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get with him! But he finished 11th last week and we can get a large price for a player who has won on the European Tour and is showing signs of form. It’s a punt, but we’ll give it a shot.
