Yesterday’s Nap, Count Jurado (10/3), was sloppy, ran poorly, but still won thanks to quality in the saddle and not much against him on the course. We’ll take it any way it comes as our nap strike rate continues to tick along nicely this jumps season.
The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Glajou, (1300 Southwell), 1pt win, 2/1:
We took a view that a recent 2m novice chase at Chepstow would be a good form line only to see the first two home walloped at Newbury last weekend. Perhaps that was pitching into too high a grade, and we’ll hold the faith for Glajou. He looked to have come to win that Chepstow race but was just run out of it late on. The testing track there may not have been ideal and this easier test, both the course and the opposition, should see a comfortable win.
Big Penny, (1423 Lingfield), 9/4: a race where every runner has a question to answer whether it be long lay-offs, the bounce factor, or current form. Big Penny is a bang in form mare with recent course winning form whose sole question is the trip. She rarely runs below 3m so this 2m4f trip is the issue, but on heavy ground it should be enough of a test for her to be near her best, and that should be good enough.
Poppa Poutine, (1432 Southwell), 6/1: a modest enough staying handicap hurdle that should fall to one of the less exposed novices. Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies is happy to throw an inexperienced horse into the limelight as he did running Poppa Poutine at Cheltenham on only his second hurdling run. He wasn’t up to that class but a by-product is that it leaves a tricky conundrum for the handicapper. A mark of 116 is basically guesswork and this massive drop in class could expose that guess as being far too generous.
Away For Slates, (1453 Lingfield), 7/2: Has run well here the last twice over a shorter trip. Looked to be coming with a winning effort last time but couldn’t pick up the pace after a crucial late blunder. Four of his five wins have come at this longer trip and that can be the key to recording an overdue win this season.
