Friday Yankee: Kalash is the titan…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Kalashnikov, (1350 Cheltenham), 1pt win, 4/1:

Great to see the Peterborough Chase saved for this card. It’s a cracking event that has plenty of decent horses albeit no stars. Each has some doubts, with Fanion D’Estruval looking to stretch his stamina, whilst the Henderson pair of Top Notch and Mister Fisher have lay-offs and poor recent runs to defeat. Kalashnikov ran a pretty fair race over hurdles when not staying 3m at Newbury. His early season form is often when to get his at his best, and this track, trip and ground look ideal.

Nordic Combined, (1240 Cheltenham), 9/1: a decent little handicap in which Tegerek is a worthy favourite on performance but has been pretty reluctant to start of late and may be worth taking on. Nordic Combined is a awkward old so-and-so, who needs to be nuanced to victory which is admittedly tricky on this track. That said he ran well in a good race at Taunton last time, and young jockey Fergus Gillard will have learnt plenty about his mercurial ways there. He looks a fair price.

Nikap, (1315 Cheltenham), 7/1: not much between Arian, Nikap and Martila from when they were 1-2-3 at Warwick recently. Nikap made an error 3 out there but finished well and may enjoy the uphill finish here, her amateur pilot, Kieren Buckley, is good value for his claim, and factoring that in she is a whopping 12lbs better off with Arian and that should be enough.

Come On Teddy, (1535 Cheltenham), 11/2: Top weights Unowhatimeanharry and On The Blind Side both won well in recent handicaps, but both have been raised since and have big burdens to carry here. Old favourite Mohaayed is still one to closely watch for back here in the Spring, but we prefer a low weight to win today. Come On Teddy ran pretty well although beaten a long way on reappearance at Uttoxeter. He finished last season in progressive form, and 10st 2lbs and Sam Twiston-Davies looks too good a combination to overlook now he has had the benefit of that run.
