There are five Premier League matches taking place Sunday, but we’re going to concentrate on three of the top scorers in the country, who not entirely coincidentally all take penalties!
There were 92 penalties across all 380 Premier League matches in the 2019-20 season. So far this season there have been 53 from the 112 games played to date – at this rate we’ll end up with almost 180 spot kicks throughout the whole season, and this is a factor that has to be considered when betting on goalscorers.
First up Southampton take on Sheffield United. Things are going very well for the Saints this season, and they are likely to welcome back Danny Ings to the starting lineup after injury. He came on as a substitute last weekend, and promptly scored. He has netted six from eight appearances this season, and we think he’s likely to score again given Sheffield United are really struggling.
Next up sees Crystal Palace take to Tottenham at Selhurst Park. Palace are a tricky side to judge, seemingly very reliant on Wilfried Zaha to offensive inspiration. He returned last week after a Covid-induced absence to lead the Eagles to an impressive 5-1 win. They may cause Spurs some problems, but Jose Mourinho’s team are full of confidence and playing well, and we think they will win. Harry Kane has scored 20 goals in 29 league appearances under Mourinho, and we take him to net again today.
Finally Fulham host Liverpool at Craven Cottage. The hosts have started to show some form, holding City to a 2-0 defeat away from home last weekend after beating Leicester the weekend before. However, their record against the Reds is not impressive – Liverpool have won six straight league games, scoring 18 goals and conceding just four times. Mohamed Salah became Liverpool’s top scorer in the Champions League, and he has his eyes firmly on the top goalscorer trophy again this season. We’ll take him to net.
Ings, Kane and Salah all to score, 1 pt, at 7/1, William Hill
