NAP OF THE DAY: Potters Legend, (1500 Sandown), 1pt win, 8/1:
This veterans final is packed full of old codgers. Potters Legend is one of the relatively younger ones here and has looked revitalised after a wind op with two excellent runs this season, winning well at Warwick and then a good second in a valuable Cheltenham handicap. Compared to these he is in the pink of form and should be half the price.
Bon Retour, (1413 Cork), 3/1: won on handicap and stable debut at Galway after import from France. Ran respectably in mares races afterwards until returning to handicaps in a good race at Navan. Looked dangerous there until the fuel gauge ran dry and this step back in trip looks ideal. Can regain the winning thread.
Galice Macalo, (1425 Sandown), 11/4: mare has been in fine form this season and never better than when a good second in a valuable handicap here on heavy ground last time when looking a winner til collared late by the dogged Benson. Proven over course and ground and gets a 7lb allowance that helps equate the ratings difference with the favourite here who is yet to show the same aptitude for conditions.
Monsieur Le Coq, (1535 Sandown), 7/2: is admittedly 2lbs above his mark when romping home in this race 2 years ago, but is on the same mark as when 3rd in the Greatwood last year before fine runs in the International and the Betfair. Recent form leaves plenty to be desired but has tried chasing and racing in France. This is much more his cup of tea, and with Chester Williams’s 5lb claim he looks far too close in the weights to lesser horses and can outclass them.
