The Premier League weekend ends later Monday, with the clash between Southampton and Liverpool at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Reds have hit a bit of a flat spot, dropping points in each of their last two games, resulting in their lead at the top of the table being reduced to just goal difference. Southampton have also failed to win any of their last four matches, but three of these games have ended in draws, suggesting they have become a tricky side to beat.
Liverpool have suffered more injury problems, with Joel Matip now out for around three weeks with the groin injury sustained against West Brom just after Christmas. This could make them susceptible to crosses, especially given James Ward-Prowe’s dead-ball prowess. Giant central defender Jannik Vestergaard is also injured, but the 28/1 on offer that his defensive partner Jan Bednarek scores may be worth considering.
However, we think that Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara could feature from the start, having impressed as a substitute on his return from injury against Newcastle on Wednesday. He could offer the touch of class that the Reds have missed over the last couple of matches, and the 8/1 on offer than he is named man of the match seems a very good price to us.
