There are a number of FA Cup ties scheduled for this Sunday, but we’re reluctant to bet on many of these early cup games as we’re never quite sure that the big teams will pick full strength sides. Manchester United versus Liverpool is different though, and that’s where our focus will be today.
The two sides met in the league last weekend, with both sides prepared to play out a rather tame goalless draw. This, however, is a cup tie and there must be a winner. Liverpool have lost only one of their last 11 games against Manchester United, but it’s pretty clear which of these teams is currently in better form, and it’s not the defending league champions!
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made it quite clear in the past that the Premier League is his priority, at the expense of the domestic cups, and his team face a difficult match away at Tottenham on Thursday. Although he is likely to recall Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino to the starting lineup after resting them on Thursday in the home defeat by Burnley, he has to make a difficult decision on Joel Matip. The central defender has been injury prone this season, but is desperately needed given the long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. He could be saved for Thursday.
With this in mind, Liverpool could lack height defensively and that brings United’s own man mountain Harry Maguire into focus. The central defender is a constant threat in his opponents’ penalty areas, and we’ll take the 18/1 on offer that he scores a header today.
