The European Tour remains in the Middle East this week, with the Emirates Golf Course hosting the Dubai Desert Classic from Thursday.
We at Lap of the Odds HQ were fortunate enough to tip Tyrrell Hatton to win last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and can’t desert him as he tees up again just down the road. Hatton was very impressive in seeing off a strong field, including Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, and he won the tournament with a burst of birdies around the run on the Sunday, meaning the final few holes were ore of a celebration rather than nerve wracking.
He has shown in the past the ability to play well in streaks. He has won back-to-back on the European Tour before – the Dunhill Links Championship in 2017 followed by the Italian Open – and his full form figures next time out after a victory are 9-1-11-46-3-3.
He’s a shorter price than last week as this is a weaker field, but the 7/1 on offer could still seem a steal if the English star plays as well as he did last week.
Over the pond, the PGA Tour heads to California. The famed Torrey Pines golfing complex hosts the Farmers Insurance Open, with half the field at the South course for round one and half at Torrey Pines North.
The two favourites are John Rahm and Rory McIlroy. Both have excellent records around here, with Rahm winning his first professional title at this course and could very easily have triumphed again, including last year. McIlroy has two top-five finishes as many starts, but we worry about tiredness given he was playing in the Abu Dhabi last week. Rahm, by contrast, had the week off.
With this in mind, we’re going to side with the Spaniard to win this tournament. We’ll also have a punt on the double, Hatton and Rahm to both triumph.
