NAP OF THE DAY: Calculus, (1345 Southwell), 1pt win, 9/1:
A maiden handicap and by definition a weak affair. Calculus is the rank outsider but nearly pinched a race from the front here two runs ago as a 50/1 shot when beating all but a well backed Irish raider. A longer trip at Newcastle last time was wholly unsuitable and with no obvious front runners in this small field he could get loose on the front against horses who obviously find it hard to win. He looks great value from a tactics angle.
Nick Vedder, (1505 Southwell), 2/1: not much to choose between Nick Vedder, Excessible and Vape based on previous meetings. They have all crept slowly up the weights and it’s Nick Vedder’s smooth travelling style that suggests he may cope best with the weight rise.
True Hero, (1515 Southwell), 2/1: was historically rated much higher than this. It signalled that this mark of 50 could spark a revival when fading late on here over 6f last time. Is the best in here by a few ponds even if 50 is fair, but with some headroom in that rating he should be far too good for these.
Iva Reflection, (1545 Southwell), 7/2: a tight looking handicap but ratings suggest Iva Reflection is the best horse in the race and he is capable of giving away the weight. Tactics will be key as they all like to be prominent, but Holly Doyle should be able to sit just on the rear end of the leader and strike at the top of the straight.
