The Premier League clash tonight sees Leeds take on Southampton at Elland Road.
The hosts are a very entertaining watch, but they have lost the last five league games that defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips has missed. He is likely to be absent again today, so we’re very reluctant to side with the Premier League newcomers.
Southampton ended a club record run of six consecutive league defeats by drawing against Chelsea on Saturday, and have started to look solid again after their disastrous trip to Old Trafford. But their total of four points in 2021 is the lowest in the Premier League, hardly inspiring confidence.
However, there is one area that we think we can exploit. Leeds have conceded 11 goals from set pieces (excluding penalties) in the top flight this season, a joint high. In James Ward-Prowse, Southampton have one of the best crossers of a dead-ball in the league.
With this in mind, we’re going to take a punt on Jannik Vestergaard scoring a header. The giant central defender is back from injury, and has already scored three time with his head this season. He’s a nice price, at 14/1, and we’ll be aboard.
There is also a Champions League match to enjoy this evening, with Atletico Madrid taking on Chelsea, in Bucharest for Covid reasons.
Chelsea go into the tie unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager in January, but they have a tough task on their hands tonight. Atletico are an experienced side in this competition, and currently lead the Spanish top division, ahead of both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
We think highly of this Atletico side, and think Chelsea could struggle tonight. A lot of focus will be on Luis Suarez, who is having another excellent season, but we’ll take a punt with midfielder Marcos Llorente. The Spanish international has scored eight times in 22 starts this season, and netted twice against Liverpool last season. He’s 5/1 to score anytime tonight.
